Luke Skywalker – Hero’s Journey

The Mundane World

Luke Skywalker begins his story as a young man living on the desert planet of Tatooine.  He lives with his aunt and uncle on a moisture farm and dreams of a more exciting life.

The Call To Adventure

When two droids arrive at the farm with a mysterious message from a princess, Luke receives his call.  He is led by R2D2 to a meeting with Obi-Wan Kenobi who explains the background to the princess’ plea.  The droids and princess are part of the organized Rebellion against the Empire.  Kenobi also begins teaching Luke about the Force and hands Luke his father’s light saber.

Crossing The Threshold

After his aunt and uncle are killed by Imperial troops, Luke sees no option but to travel with Kenobi away from Tatooine.  They visit the space port, Mos Eisley and hire the services of a ship captain, Han Solo.  Blasting off from the surface of Tatooine, Luke Skywalker crosses the threshold, leaving his old world behind.

The Path of Trials

Luke’s journey begins on the Millennium Falcon with his new companions: Kenobi, the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, Han Solo, and Chewbacca.  They head to the Alderaan system where they expect to find the princess.  The planet has been disintegrated and they soon find the cause.  The Death Star catches the Falcon in its tractor beam and the group is dragged on board.

Evading the troops, Luke and friends discover that the princess, Leia, is in one of the prison cells.  They hatch a plan to rescue her, and with her help, manage to all escape on the Falcon.  All except Kenobi who sacrifices himself to Darth Vader to allow the escape.

With the design plans of the Death Star safely on board inside R2-D2, they head to the Rebellion outpost in order to formulate an attack on the Death Star.  While flying an X-Wing fighter, Luke single handedly destroys the Death Star.

Master of Two Worlds

Having learned many things on his journey, Luke changes from an innocent farm boy to a leader of the Rebellion.  His acceptance of the Force and his responsibility to the greater good, make him a hero.
